Every year as we get closer to the end, you start to see top 10 lists come out about different things.
If you use music apps like Spotify, then you may have received your yearly wrapped list. Over the last week I have seen these all-over social media, and it is fun to see what people’s top 5 lists are. You can learn many things about people from the things they listen to.
This week we will look at one of the top 5 songs that are written in the Bible. The Magnificat of Mary.
This week’s challenge: Read over Mary’s song a few times in Luke 1:46–55.
Mary’s Song of Praise: The Magnificat
46 And Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord,
47and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
48 for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant.
For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed;
49 for he who is mighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his name.
50 And his mercy is for those who fear him
from generation to generation.
51 He has shown strength with his arm;
he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts;
52 he has brought down the mighty from their thrones
and exalted those of humble estate;
53 he has filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich he has sent away empty.
54 He has helped his servant Israel,
in remembrance of his mercy,
55 as he spoke to our fathers,
to Abraham and to his offspring forever.”
- Read the section before and after. Think about how if you were to write a song, what kinds of things might you say?
- What part of your life in Christ would you refer to?
- What words would you choose?
- What tune or music genre would you incorporate?
- Would you include instruments or would it simply be acapella?
If you are willing and able to write a song of sorts, I would love to read it or hear you sing it!
Ultimately, this is a wonderful example of praise. May we reflect on what Mary treasured in her heart about the Lord Jesus and may it help us in our own exclamations of praise.
