What Happened Next?

I’m an “epilogue-kinda-guy.” When reading a novel, watching a movie or hearing a story, I’m always interested in the “what happens then” questions. The resolution of the tension, the highpoint of the plot is great, but what’s the long term? What happens to the characters over time? After seven hefty novels, meticulously following Harry Potter from his 11th birthday through his 18th, the author then wrapped everything up with a short 8-page epilogue, following the characters 20 years out. Loved it!

Of course, I would never reduce the post-resurrection appearances of Jesus to His disciples as “epilogue!” What follows the resurrection of Jesus is as much a part of the Word of God and redemptive history as any other part. However, there is undeniably a focus on what comes before. Which prompts the question, “What happens to Jesus and to all the disciples after Sunday morning?”

As Christians we are rightfully captivated by the crucifixion and the resurrection, Good Friday and Easter morning. On the cross, Jesus’ great act of sacrifice purchased salvation for us all, and the empty tomb demonstrates God’s future for the redeemed—resurrected life. But, what comes after that? What follows the crucifixion and resurrection? The Gospels recount numerous contacts with the risen Lord prior to His eventual ascension, and these interactions help direct our daily lives today, as we await His second coming!

It is after Resurrection Sunday that Jesus meets with Doubting Thomas, when He cooks breakfast for the disciples following a night of fishing, when He delivers the Great Commission, when He reinstates Peter following his denials of Jesus and when He gives the gift of the Holy Spirit.

As we explore the post-resurrection appearances of Jesus together in worship, read John 20:19-23.

  1. What is a modern-day parallel to the fear that the disciples were feeling in verse 19? Who might feel this way?
  2. Jesus’ appearance in the room is often portrayed as miraculous. What in the text leads to that conclusion? What does it say about Jesus’ post-resurrection body?
  3. In verse 20, why did Jesus show them his hands and side? What was He trying to accomplish?
  4. Jesus “sends” the disciples just as He was sent. How was He sent? What does that mean for your life as a Christian?
  5. What is the connection between Jesus’ breath and the Holy Spirit (verse 22)? What does it mean that we all are filled with the Spirit?
