Our Solid Rock

By: Congregational Education Team, C.E.T.

Psalm 18 tells us that “The Lord is my rock and my salvation.” In Matthew, Jesus told the parable about building a house on solid rock verses building it on sand (Matthew 7:24-27). God told Moses to refer to Him as “I AM” indicating that God is eternal and timeless. He is the Alpha and the Omega – the beginning and the end. Hebrew 13:8 states that “Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”

It’s pretty clear that our Triune God is eternal and is eternally the same. He is our Rock, and Jesus is not only our Rock but also our Redeemer.  What awesome news for those who believe.  Many of you know the old line, “the only constant in life is change.”  In our temporal lives, this is pretty much true; but thanks be to God, we do have an anchor, a rock to which we can cling no matter what storms life throws at us. Our spiritual lives should be built on this solid Rock whose truths never change.

In our modern world, this truth that God is eternal, unchanging and immutable is, once again, being challenged. It’s not so new, for example in the 1960s and 1970s, there was a popular cultural idea that claimed that God had died. The idea was that modern society simply had advanced so much that there was no more need for God. It was over 50 years ago that Time magazine did a cover story entitled, “Is God Dead?”

Sound familiar? So many in our culture today are saying that there are no absolute truths. It’s all relative. There are many ways that one can believe and be saved. They say that we are to love one another – of course we are – Christ makes that very clear, and He did that over 2000 years ago! But our modern culture goes on to mistakenly insist that to love someone means you must not only accept but also affirm everything about them – their actions and beliefs. If you don’t then you are labeled “a hater!” We get inundated by these false notions in life today – by the media, by politicians and even in our schools. Do whatever feels right to you and make it your own truth. So, forget God’s eternal law or His everlasting truth — houses built on shifting sand!!

Just as believers in the past, we are being called today to boldly stand up for the absolute truths of our Triune God. How timely that at Hebron’s March 9th Faith and Life Conference entitled “It’s worth fighting for,” one of the topics will be “fighting for our faith.” John 15:18-19 tells us, “If the world hates you, know that it hated me before it hated you. If you were of this world, the world would love you as its own, but because you are not of this world, but I chose you out of this world, therefore the world hates you.” Strong words but this world is not our final home, so may we all, at Hebron, be willing to stand for God’s truths as found in His Word, in 2024 and always. God and His Word are the Solid Rocks upon which we should stand and want to build our houses. Mark 8:36 says, “For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?” May we all boldly fight for and hold on to His truth.
