Our Discernment Process – Is There a Better Match? Keeping it Simple and What’s Next?

by Session

Question: What’s this all about?
Answer:  As you think about these few items, you will hopefully see, in a nutshell, what this is all about.

  • Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” Do you believe and accept this as True?
  • Is Scripture God’s inerrant word? Is it authoritative? Is it the absolute Truth? (Or is truth relative to cultural thinking’s interpretation?)
  • Jesus also said, “everyone who acknowledges me before men, I will also acknowledge him before my Father who is in heaven, but whoever denies me before men, I will also deny before my Father who is in heaven.”  Do you also accept this as True?
  • Is belief in our Triune God and His absolute Truth worth fighting for?
  • Is it important to you to have solid, scripturally-based preaching and teaching at Hebron both now and in the future?
  • Do you want Hebron’s leadership to uphold the historic essentials of the Christian faith?

The Session believes the answers to the above questions are a resounding YES, and that the PCUSA has continued to wander so far away that they can no longer honestly answer in the same way.

What’s next?

Here is a brief list of what will be coming up in this process:

  • Henry met with the Presbytery Discernment Team (DT) on Wednesday, April 17th to discuss the next steps.
  • The DT will be setting up a meeting with Hebron’s Session (TBD).
  • Next, the DT will schedule 3 congregational meetings (TBD).
  • A congregational vote will be held at a later date after these meetings.
  • We are looking most seriously at the Evangelical Presbyterian Church (EPC) with whose theology we match so much more closely.  Session will be voting on this soon.
  • All of this will take 6 to 12 months.
  • Depending upon the vote, negotiations for separation will take place.

Please keep praying for clarity, unity, and that God will be glorified throughout this process.
