On Sunday afternoon, October 27th, the church membership was polled regarding the
question: “Shall the session seek to negotiate a dismissal agreement with Pittsburgh
Presbytery that, with the congregation’s approval, would lead Hebron Presbyterian Church to be dismissed to another Reformed denomination?” A resounding “yes,” echoing the Lord’s direction and will, was given.
After years of study, prayer and discussion by the session, and much communication with the congregation, the question of whether we should move forward to seek dismissal from the PCUSA and realignment with a more like-minded Presbyterian body (reformed in theology and biblically Christ-centered) was put to the membership of Hebron. By an overwhelming majority, the congregation voted to move forward. To do so, we needed a positive vote from a majority of our membership (adjusted, as necessary) and the final tally clearly demonstrated that. Of those present and voting on Sunday, the membership voted 205 to 16 to proceed. The 205 affirmative votes represent a strong majority of our adjusted membership, so we move forward to the next steps.
Next steps for Hebron come in two forms—
- For the congregation as a whole: Consistent, earnest prayer! We all know the truth that “the heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps” (Proverbs 16:9). We want this process to be guided and led by Jesus Christ, and the only way to secure that is by faithfully seeking Him and listening well. Please keep it up!
- For the leadership of Hebron: Again, consistent, earnest prayer! We now enter into a time of negotiation with the PCUSA, to determine our dismissal arrangements. These will include timing, a financial agreement, a receiving denomination and other concerns. This will be a challenging time, so we covet your prayers as we move forward as the Lord leads.
People are asking if I (Henry) am doing cartwheels—that’s an image no one should have in their minds; but, yes, indeed I am. Part of my pastoral responsibilities here at Hebron is to follow that which I feel is God’s will for the church into the future, and that includes assisting the church in securing faithful pastoral leadership when needed. While every pastoral transition is difficult, I truly believe we have taken a step to help the next transition be smoother and more faithful. The likelihood of one day calling a pastor who reflects the biblical and theological convictions of Hebron Church is much greater as we are affiliated with a more self-consciously orthodox denomination. Yes, with greater confidence in God’s plans for Hebron Church in the future, I am doing cartwheels.
As always, if you have questions, concerns, or simply want to talk all about what is happening, I encourage you to speak with an elder, or give me a call. I welcome your input and thoughts as we continue to move forward as God directs.
In Christ, Henry (on behalf of the Session)
